It's actually kind of funny. Every year it snows in Ontario. A lot. And every year the Toronto media makes it seem like some kind of a big deal.
True, it really sucks out there right now (notice the expression on my face. I didn't do that on purpose), but it's Canada. This is what it does here in the winter.

Today's observation: while wearing a wrap sweater will make one feel cute, in an early 80s sitcom kind of way, they are actually very annoying to wear and will result in constant readjusting and figiting until you finally lose your mind and tear the stinking sweater from your body.

(Note: That last part might, probably, definitely not be totally true.)

so I'm at work, using my computer with no speakers. my friend Adam sends me a link and tells me to watch it without the sound. It's a clip from The Price is Right called "How not to play 10 Chances". There's a spectacularly dense woman trying to win a car by writing down the price of some flatware, but she's having some trouble and Bob Barker is clearly frustrated. The ensuing conversation follows:

After much soul searching the young man finally decided that the only solution was to fix up his ill-gotten bikes one by one and then leave them around town. Every night when he got home from work and every weekend he would tune, oil and often repaint the bikes. He returned the first bike he'd taken to the same no parking sign where he'd found it, and then he sat in a nearby bush and watched. After what seemed like a long time a teenage girl came along and noticed the bike. She walked past once, noticing the bike, then looked back and paused, turned around, walked back to it, looked around to see if anyone was watching and then grabbed the bike, jumped on it and whooped as she rode away.
Seeing this, the young man felt a feeling that he'd previously only felt when he'd been the one taking the bike. Then and there he vowed to give away all of the bikes that he'd stolen, and then to steal more bikes and give those away too.

(the story doesn't end here, but i don't feel like finishing it right now, so pretend it does for a while)

Once upon a time there was a young man who lived in a small apartment above an old man's garage. He worked as a bicycle courier in a large city. He didn't smoke or drink or do drugs, he always paid his rent on time. On the whole, he was a very ordinary young man, except for one thing.
Now, everyone has secrets. what fun would life be without a skeleton or two inside your closet? But this young man's secret is a very strange one, considering what he does and what he's like - he's a compulsive bike thief.
One would assume that someone who depends upon a bicycle to earn his living would be sensitive to that kind of theft, and indeed, he is, but he just can't seem to help himself. It began as a lark; one day he found a bike with no lock, just left leaning against a no parking sign, and not knowing if it belonged to someone or had been abandoned, he jumped onto it and rode it home. The rush he felt was like no other he had ever experienced! After that he was hooked, but he only took bicycles that were not locked. As you can imagine, this kind of oppourtunity does not come along very often, so eventually the young man was forced to step things up and he started breaking locks in order to satiate his need for that rush.
Unfortunately, once he had stolen a bike and ridden it home the high faded and the young man would start to feel bad. Not only was he wracked with guilt, but he was beginning to fill the old man's garage with all of the bikes he'd brought home and hadn't known what to do with. He knew that one day the old man would finally go into his garage and discover what the young man had been up to. The thought kept him awake at night, but still he couldn't help himself, every few days he would steal another bike and ride it home.

election over - conservative minority.
i don't particularly want to vote again next year, but i don't particularly want Stephen Harper representing Canada to the world either. i'm glad he'll be tempered by the other parties, so we might not lose homosexual marriage, abortion or public healthcare, but he's just gonna roll over and present as soon as George W. comes up with some hair brained scheme and wants Canada along for the ride. we'd be at war right now if Harper had been Prime Minister a few years ago.
